New Poll: MI Families for Economic Prosperity Poll Shows Voters Not Happy with Upton Votes on Healthcare, Taxes

Results show Upton with slim 4-point lead; loses support as voters learn about his record

MICHIGAN — Today, Michigan Families for Economic Prosperity released a poll showing Congressman Fred Upton in a tight race for reelection in November. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, shows Upton with a 45-41 percent lead over his Democratic opponent Matt Longjohn. Voters also view Upton unfavorably with 44 percent rating his unfavorable and 38 percent rating him favorably.

“This is the second poll in a week that shows voters in the 6th district are not happy with Upton’s vote for the Republican tax plan or his attempt to strip protections from people with preexisting conditions,” said Hugh Madden, communications director with Progress Michigan. “If this race becomes a referendum on health care and taxes, Upton could very well be sent home come November.”

Two questions show Upton is highly vulnerable as voters learn more about his record. When asked about his vote to repeal health care in 2017, 58 percent of voters indicate they are less likely to vote to return Upton to Congress with only 10 percent saying they are more likely to vote for him. The Republican tax law is also a drag on Upton’s numbers with 58 percent saying his support for the law makes them less likely to vote for him and 14 percent saying they are more likely to give Congressman Upton another term.

“Our findings show that majorities of voters are very unhappy with Upton’s votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act and pass last year’s Republican tax bill – in both cases 58 percent of voters say that those votes make them less likely to vote to re-elect Upton, compared to just 10-14 percent who say it makes them more likely to support him”, said Jim Williams, polling analyst at Public Policy Polling.

The poll surveyed 750 voters in the congressional district online on September 4-5. A copy of the poll can be found here.
