Congressman Fred Upton Doubles Down on Tax Breaks for Wealthy

Nearly half of the tax break benefits top 5% of Michiganders, leaving the rest to foot the bill

KALAMAZOO —  Michigan Families for Economic Prosperity blasted Congressman Fred Upton for today’s vote to double down on more tax breaks for the wealthy. Upton’s vote is just another example of the Congressman standing with large corporate donors instead of the working families of Southwest Michigan.

“Congressman Upton has changed and can no longer claim the mantle of a moderate concerned about his community,” said Hugh Madden, communications director of Progress Michigan. “This bill gives 63 percent of the benefits to the wealthiest 20 percent of earners and will cost $3.2 trillion in lost revenue. This bill robs the future to give massive tax breaks to the wealthy.”

In Michigan, Upton’s vote will give nearly all of the benefits to wealthy people like himself. The richest 1% of Michiganders will, on average, receive a tax cut of $40,910, while hard working Michiganders will receive only $340.

“Congressman Fred Upton has chosen the pocketbooks of the wealthy over his constituents,” Madden continued. “With this vote, Upton has once again given his wealthy friends the goldmine while the people of Southwest Michigan get the shaft.”
