“Corporate Puppet” Upton Hands out Candy for Halloween
Constituents treated to sugar free butterscotch discs while corporate donors given full size candy bars
KALAMAZOO — Michigan Families for Economic Prosperity hosted “Corporate Puppet Upton” at Western Michigan University where constituents of the 16-term Congressman were able to choose between sugar-free butterscotch discs and sugar-free fruit flavored discs and “donors” were able to choose between the America’s favorite candies including Reese Cups, Snickers and other treats.
“Fred Upton likes to treat his corporate donors to tax breaks and do their bidding while the rest of us are tricked into believing he cares about our values,” said Henry Thiry, a student at Western Michigan. “Tonight, goblins, ghosts and ghouls will roam the streets in search of candy but nothing will be scarier than Fred Upton’s craven attempt to rip our health care away and gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions.”
In May 2017, Fred Upton led the charge to repeal health care and take away protections for people with pre-existing conditions. The actions by Upton nearly led to families across southwest Michigan losing coverage.
“We wanted the students of Western to see how Upton has treated his constituents and catered to his donors,” Thiry continued. “After nearly a decade of ignoring the people of his district and not holding town halls, Upton has lost the ability to be a real leader. The simple fact is that when it comes to health care, Fred Upton tricks us and treats his donors.”
