MI Families for Economic Prosperity Blast Congressman Upton for Putting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security At Risk
Upton’s vote for massive tax breaks to the country’s wealthiest individuals and largest corporations first step in cuts to vital programs

KALAMAZOO — MI Families for Economic Prosperity blasted Congressman Fred Upton after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Republicans in Congress are aiming to make cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. McConnell blamed exploding deficits for the would-be cuts. Upton joined his fellow Republicans in voting for the Republican tax breaks for the wealthy which has led to significantly higher deficits.

“Congressman Upton knew all along that his vote to give massive tax breaks to the wealthy would lead to higher deficits and calls for cuts to vital programs,” said Hugh Madden, communications director of Progress Michigan. “Upton used to be the kind of representative who put the people first but he’s lost sight of the people of southwest Michigan. Congressman Upton should immediately disavow McConnell’s words and take cuts to these programs off the table.”

The announced intention to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security is just the latest in a long line of attacks on working families, young people and seniors. Upton led the charge to repeal health care in 2017, voted for the disastrous Republican tax breaks for the wealthy and has rubber stamped the Trump agenda – voting with the President 95.5 percent of the time.

“We keep hoping the old moderate Fred Upton will show up, and we keep getting disappointed,” said former Congressman Mark Schauer from Kalamazoo. “Congressman Fred Upton has changed. He no longer is fighting for the people in his district. Instead, he’s now leading the charge to repeal health care and has said nothing to protect vital programs we rely on. In less than three weeks, we have the opportunity to hold Congressman Upton accountable for his poor performance by defeating him at the polls and sending a real voice for our region to represent us.”
