MIGOP Vote Stripping Medicaid from Families Is Latest in a Long Line of Attacks on Healthcare

Congressman Bishop and Upton have led the charge nationally to gut healthcare, silent on state law

MICHIGAN — Michigan Families for Economic Prosperity is calling out Congressman Mike Bishop and Congressman Fred Upton for their silence on the latest attack on health care for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders. The bill, passed by the Michigan Senate and House would target people on the Healthy Michigan Plan.

“Republicans in Michigan have followed the playbook written by Congressmen Upton and Bishop and used shady maneuvers to target hard working people on Medicaid. This is just another in a long line of attacks on access to health care,” said Hugh Madden, communications director of Progress Michigan. “The silence of these Congressmen while health care for thousands of families is put at risk is deafening. They should be standing with their constituents instead of corporate special interests.”

This latest vote comes after Congressman Fred Upton led the charge to revive a bill in the U.S. House in 2017 that put the health care of millions of Americans at risk. After the bill was brought back for a vote Congressman Mike Bishop voted in lock step with Paul Ryan and Upton.

“Fred Upton is just another run-of-mill conservative actively working to deny health care to hard working people,” Madden continued. “Both Upton and Bishop have failed to use their political clout to protect the Healthy Michigan Plan and for that they deserve to be called out.”
